MANAWATU BOXERS.

VISIT TO GISBORNE. LIVELY BOUTS FOUGHT. There were some lively boxing bouts, fought in an interprovincial contest at Gisborne on Wednesday evening, when a visit was paid to the East Coast centre by a team of six representing the Manawatu Boxing Association. Gisborne won four of the six contests, but the Manawatu boxers, who were treated with every kindness and hospitality by the Gisborne Association, made a splendid showing, though tire action of the referee in permitting too much clinching and holding marred the effect of their work. Results were as follow: Welterweight.—D. Heeney (Gisborne) beat J. Johnston. (Manawatu) on points in the most popular bout of the evening. Heeney took full advantage of any openings offered, and, landing heavy blows, had his opponent very tired at the end of the final session. Middleweight.-—J. McMahon (Manawatu) beat L. Turnbull (Gisborne) on points. McMahon was in great form and gave a splendid display, showing marked superiority at close quarters. Middleweight.—J. Smith (Gisborne) boat C. Ford (Manawatu). on points. This was a very exciting bout, with both mixing it freely and taking plenty of punishment in endeavouring to win by the short route. It was considered that Ford earned the decision, but the referee decided in favour of Smith. Lightweight.—T. Callaghan . (Gisborne) beat M. McGahan (Manawatu) on points. Callaghan met a clever opponent, but bored in to break under bis guard and secure the points. Featherweight.—J. Lavin (Manawatu) boat A. Andrew (Gisborne) on points alter a fairly even contest. Lavin was better at the in-fighting and his ringcraft was the deciding factor in his favour. Bantamweight.—W. Shaskey (Gisborne) beat J. Collins (Manawatu) on points after a clover display of welltimed blows against a strong opponent.
