DROUGHT SITUATION.
CONCERN IN SOUTHLAND. Per Press Association. INVERCARGILL, Sept. 27. The seriousness of the situation faced by Southland dairy farmers as a result of the shortage of feed, due to the late spring, is revealed in a dis mission by the Farmers’ Union. One estimate placed the losses of dairy cows in the area between Mataura and the sea coast at over a thousand. _ The intake has dropped in some dairy factories to half, and others have not yet opened. In some cases the loss amounts to 50 per cent.. The position is attributed to the dryness of last season and the lack of nourishment in a lot of turnip crops. The meeting resolved that steps be taken to obtain an immediate rebate on the railway freight on pressed hay front Canterbury to feed dairy stock, and that the matter be taken direct to the Prime Minister and the M.F. for Southland.
