AORANGI

(From Our Own Corrcsponden.) AOR ANC I, Sept. 26. Favoured with ideal weather conditions, the local meeting houso was a gay scene last night, and the large number of patrons spent a most enjoyable evening, when a social and dance was hold for the BJaori mission funds, which should greatly benefit therefrom. The meeting-house looked most attractive with its decorations of_ foliage, coloured lights, and gay paper streamers. The committee worked incessantly to keep the enjoyment in full swing, while in the matter of supper arrangements they wore willingly helped by the ladies of the district. Novelty- dances were held, the Monte Carlo walls being won by Mr and Mrs J. Cowan, and the lucky Gay Gordons by Mrs R. Grant and Mr .7. Whyte. An orchestra provided excellent music, j while Miss A. Karehana and Mr J. Wereta I contributed extras. The M.C. was Mr W. Ward. During the evening, Mr M. J. | Durio thanked all those who, by their pati ronage, had made the evening such a sucJ cess, those who had. contributed to the supper, who had given . such delightful I items (some of whom had travelled a dis- ! tancc) and especially the Mayor and ! Mayoress of Foikling (Mr and Mrs T. Collins) for thoiv presence', as he knew that tlie many calls on their- office had made it very difficult for them to attend. The “Bing Boys Male Quartette,” Messrs D. Durio, J. Wereta. Huatahi, and Kurauti, were next heard to advantage in a voc-al item and responded to an encore. A Maori action song was much enjoyed, and was presented by Mesdames Cowan, Huatahi, and Misses Karehana, and Lawton. Mr C. Stuart was in good voice when he sang “Ole Faithful” and as tlie first encore “The Isle of Capri” and, when recalled again, “When Irish Eyes are Smiling.” A rousing haka followed, with the audience demanding an encore, and enjoying the items immensely, participants in this being Messrs D. and P. Doric, H. and R. Merritt, and 15. King. An encored traditional Maori vocal item | with actions was next, and was . rendered by Mesdames Cowan, Huatahi, Misses Karelia and Lawton, and Messrs D. Durie, Wereta, and W. Ward. Miss A. Karehana then sang charmingly, and was j-ecalled twice, Mr Wereta being accompanist. A double poi dance followed, and this received hearty applause which was thoroughly deserved; it was presented by Mesdames Cowan and Huatahi, and Misses Karehana and Lawton. Mr D. McFarlane was well received in a yodelling item and was encored, Mr P. Kiri accompanying him. The last item, a vocal duet, was delightfully rendered by Miss Karehana and Mi- W.
