PILLION RIDING.

PROHIBITION SUGGESTED. THOUGHT TOO DRASTIC. The danger contingent upon the practice of pillion riding on motorcycles was considered by the committee of the Manawatu Automobile Association at its meeting last evening, when a suggestion was made that tire motor clubs might, valuably, urge caution on their members to lessen the present toll of life and limb. The Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union advised that at its Dominion conference, a resolution had been passed “that automobile associations be asked to move in the direction of having pillion riding on motor-cycles prohibited.” Delegates had considered that too many accidents had occurred from this source. Mr N. H. Mackie (chairman) said that when the subject had been discussed some years ago it had been felt that the regulation requiring astride riding went far enough. It was true that many regrettable accidents had occurred from this source, but to go as far as endeavouring to prevent pillion riding might he too drastic a step. Mr E. R, B. Holben suggested that .the 'members of the division should take up the matter with the M.P.’s for their districts, to secure Parliamentary action. The motor clubs might also take action' Want of thought, and carelessness, were the source of lire trouble. Mr Mackie said it appeared to him that the suggested move was rather drastic, and, on his motion, it was decided to express sympathy and suggest that the motor clubs take action.
