PLUNKET SOCIETY.

AIOTHERS’ AFTERNOON

Close upon 100 members and friends assembled at the Parish Hall on Tuesday afternoon when the Feilding Plunket Society gave a welcome to Miss Fitz Gibbon, of Dunedin, nursing adviser to the New Zealand Plunket Society. The president of the .Feilding branch (Mrs A. C. McCorkindnle) presided. On her arrival Miss Fitz Gibbon was presented with a charming posy of violets, while Mrs T. Collins (Mayoress) was given one of cream primroses. Mrs A'. Sugden (first president of the locnl branch), Mrs J. H. Perrott (president of the Sandon brannch), Mrs C. L. Williams (president of the KiwiteaIvimbolton sub-branch), and Miss Armstrong (Feilding’s Plunket nurse) were made the recipients of delightful shoulder sprays. In extending a welcome to Miss Fitz Gibbon, the president expressed her pleasure at the large attendance ■ of mothers. She stressed the society’s work in the direction of pre-natal care, babyhood and pre-school age. and in dealing with the efforts of the branch spoke of the recent very generous gift from Mr T. Kelly and Miss B. Kelly of a valuable central section of land for a permanent building for the society. The transfer had just been completed and the committee, together with the advisory board, were considering a campaign for building funds and also plans in connection with the rooms. The first donation had come to hand from Miss Armstrong, who had raised over £9 by a competition among mothers and friends, the win-

ner of which was Mrs E. Churclier, of Te Pua. Other afternoons such as this would be held at suitable intervals, and the programmes would include competitions in needlework, knitting, soft toys, and exhibitions of infants’ clothing, etc. Mrs MeCorkindale concluded her remarks by appealing to the mothers for greater cooperation in future .activities, so that all should work happily together for the welfare of the children.

Miss Fitz Gibbon gave an interesting outline of the work of the society, touching on the achievements of the Karitane hospitals in connection with delicate babies. Her talk was listened to with great attention, and a vote of thanks to her was proposed by Mrs Frank Mason and carried by acclamation.

Mrs Bruce McLeod, of Colyton, took the opportunity on behalf of both town and country parents to express their warm appreciation of the gift of land from Mr and Miss Kelly. Mrs W. B. Gray voiced the thanks of all present for the very pleasant afternoon and the pleasure given by Mrs F. Collier, of Sandon, Mrs J. H. Coppock and Mrs Joblin, of Kiwi tea, who had rendered musical items. The function concluded with the serving of afternoon tea.
