“SKELETON” WEED.

FEARS OF INTRODUCTION Mr H. S. S. Kyle asked the Minister of Agriculture whether his attention had been drawn to the serious spread and ravages of the “skeleton” weed in Australia nnd, in view of the importance of the. wheatgrowing industry in this Dominion, whether he would take what immediate action was necessary to prevent the importation of this serious menace in free-of-duty feeding barley and other stock foods imported into the Dominion from Australia.

Hon. C. E. Macmillan replied that the Department of Agriculture had kept in close touch with the spread of “skeleton” weed in Australia and did not, hold the view that there was at present any danger in the importation of feed barley from Australia in as much as the weed had not yet become established in the barley areas of South Australia and Victoria, from which importation was made. Many lines of imported grain from Australia had been examined for the presence of weed seeds without any seeds of “skeleton” weed being found. Arrangements had now been made for regular examinations of all importations.
