BUDGET DEFICIT
FOR NEW SOUTH WALES. ECONOMIC STATE IMPROVES. REDUCED WAGES TAX. (United Press Association. —By Electric Teffigraph.—Copyright.) SYDNEY, Sept. 24. Continued improvement in the economic condition of this State was reflected in the Budget speech of the Premier and Treasurer (Mr B. S. Stevens) in the New South Wales Assembly to-night. He stated that the revenue for the year just ended had amounted to £43,572,071 and expenditure to £45,870,994, revealing a deficit of, £2,298,923. Estimated revenue for the current year is £45,317,196 and expenditure £47,067,196, leaving a deficit of £1,750,000. After providing two millions for sinking fund payments, the Government intended further reducing the wages tax where weekly wages were less than £5 from January 1, the relief thus afforded aggregating £500,000. There would also be a reduction of 10 per cent, in rail freights from November 1 on wheat, fruit, and dairy produce.
