TENNIS IN AMERICA.
MENZEL DEFAULTS TO BUDGE. LOS ANGELES, Sept. 24. The men’s singles final in the Pacific South-West tennis tournament ended unsatisfactorily, R. Menzel (Czechoslovakia) defaulting" to J. D. Budge (U.S.A.) when Budge was leading I—6,1 —6, 11 —9, 6 —3. Menzel said he defaulted in deference to Iris partner in the mixed doubles, Miss Carolin Babcock, with whom lie played in a semi-final later. While it seemed likely that Budge would win, with Menzel obviously fobt-weary, there had been little difference between the players. In the mixed doubles Menzel and Miss Babcock won the first set 6 —3 from Miss N. Lyle (Britain), and J. Brugnon (France) and dropped the second, s—-7.5 — -7. Play was then stopped because of bad light. The match will be resumed to-morrow. Budge and Mrs Van Ryn (U.S.A.) advanced to the final by beating E. Maier (Spain) and Miss K. Stammers (Britain), 7—9, 6—4, 10—S. Allison defaulted in the men’s singles on Sunday because lie was suffering from a bad cold.
A cable published yesterday stated that Budge had beaten Shields in the final. A correction states that this match was a semi-final.
