HORSE SALE AT FEILDING.

MARKET QUIETER. AN INDIFFERENT OFFERING. Values at the horse sale in Feikling yesterday afternoon were well below those ruling at the previous sales, perhaps the main contributing factor being the indifferent quality of the pffering. Where the condition, age and mouth were all that was desired there was no lack of competition, but between these lines there were many aged and extremely poor conditioned sorts which detracted very much from the tone of the sale. Purchasers appeared to find it difficult to fulfil their requirements, the general stamp of horse 1 being either too light or too heavy for much competition. A few reliable active sorts filled the bill, and for these 'the reserve figure was well passed. As in the previous sales, it was good farm horses suitable for all work that were wanted, hacks and others not finding a groat demand. A BARE MARKET FOR POTATOES. The prico of southern potatoes in the Wellington markets has made a meteoric rise during the last week. On September 17 they were being quoted at £ll to £ll 6s a ton for prime quality, whereas yesterday afternoon they had shot up to £lB ex store. It is reported that a lino of potatoes which sold at the opening of the market yesterday morning at £l4 a ton changed hands twice during the day and was bought by the original broker during the afternoon at £l6 10s. Merchants reported yesterday that the market was practically bare of supplies, and that due to a keen demand the price was advancing hourly. Usually, at this time of the year, the domand for southern potatoes slackens off and changes over to new potatoes. Owing, however, to heavy rains and a bad season, the Pukekohe crop is very late and the yield is poor. Small supplies of new potatoes have been arriving in Wellington from Nelson and a few have come trqm Pukekohe to sell at about 4d a lb.

Merchants said yesterday that it was difficult to quote for southern potatoes as the market was excited and moving up all the time. One broker said that first thing yesterday morning they were being quoted at £l4 a ton f.o.b. Lyttelton, but late in the afternoon the price had moved up to £l6 a ton, which, would be equivalent, with freight and charges, to nearly £l9 a ton ex store Wellington. He fully expected the price to go to £2O a ton before tho end of the week, a level that had not been known for years. As against this, ..however, there was bound to be a falling-off in the retail demand, since many people simply could not afford to buy them.

AUCKLAND MARKETS,

AUCKLAND, Sept. 24. The chief feature of the local grain and produce markets is the of supplies in many important lines. The VVaipiata arrived from the south yesterday with a fair-sized cargo of potatoes, but these came on a bare market, and, simultaneously with a sharp firming of values at southern ports, local lmportcis based their prices on to-dav’s southern parity, namely, approximately £ls per ton, the highest figure that has ruled for many years. . The oats market is very firm. Dealers have difficulty in obtaining requirements, and local rates have been moved up 2d to 4s lOd a bushel. Oaten sheaf chaff is steady at £7 15s per ton. Fowl wheat is selling steadily at 5s 7d per bushel. Maize is in good demand at 4s 5d to 4s 6d per bushel. Pollard is selling freely, the mill price being £7 per ton. Onions aro almost unprocurable. However, there should bo plenty available next week, as the first Canadian shipment is due in the Niagara, and later in the week the Mariposa will bring further supplies from California. These are expected to sell at about 23s per 1001 b bag compared with 275, to-day’s valuation. ' -
