EXTRACTS FROM “STANDARD.” SEPTEMBER 25, 1905.
Recent floods had made the Mangaonc bridges on Rangitikei Line and at Bunnythorpe unsafe for traffic. Robert’s Lino was closed. A large and representative meeting had been hold at Napier at which the desirability of utilising the water power available at Lake Waikaremoana for the generation .of electricity was advanced. It was said that the lake would provide 140,000 horse-power, enough to generate all the electricity required in the North Island. The Glen Oroua Dairy Uompasy had pui-qhascd Pyke’s creamery firom the Dairy Union and the directors of the firstnamed expected • thar the output would be 60 tons a month jn the best of the season, the company having six creameries in all. A pen of 200 ewe hoggets, bred by Mr E. J. Jliddiford, had realised 27s a head at the Fcilding salo. The Makerua Estate, it was stated, was to be cut up and sold to flaxmillers. It was stated that a gold roof had been found near Opaki. Mastcrton. The results of a trial assay wore stated to be seven shillings worth of gold'and three shillings worth of silver to the ton of stone. A poll of ratepayers at Woodvillo had sanctioned the raising of a loan of £7OOO to build gasworks.
