RANGITIKEI.

AIARTON, Sept. 24. The Alarton Borough Council met last evening, the Alayor (Air F. Purnell) presiding. A letter was received from the Comptroller of Customs advising that after careful consideration bitumen cannot be exempted from sales tax. —Received. An application from Air A. Still for the lease of part section 192, Marton Junction, for 12 months at £4 per annum was received. The application was granted. A letter was to hand from Air C. AlcKinnon stating that the prospective tenants objected to the setting back of the building line on Broadway, on tbe ground that it would place tlie shops at a disadvantage, further stating that he was prepared to dedicate to the council his share of the land necessary for the extension of Hair Street to Lower High Street. The council also had before it a letter from the New Zealand - Farmers’ Co-operative Dist. Coy., Ltd., agreeing to the dedication of Hair Street at a cost not to exceed £25 and stating that the question of setting back the building in Broadway in the event of rebuilding had not been considered. It was decided to point out to Mr McKinnon that the New Zealand Farmers’ Co-op. Dist. Coy. had not thus far declined to agree to the setting back, that the council’s offer to form Hair Street was regarded as a quid pro quo for the setting back of the frontage, and that since the whole arrangement was now nullified, the council would be quite willing to meet Air AlcKinnon at an early date to discuss the proposals further. The annual general meeting of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Tennis Club was held last evening. It was stated that the courts ' were in good order, the new lawn mower purchased helping considerably in that direction. It was mentioned that as the club now has three courts a large number of members could still be admitted. Opening day was fixed for November 2. The election of officers took place as follows: —President, Rev. D. Afclvor; vice-presidents, Ales, srs AV. H. Brown and F. Nicol; secretary and treasurer, Air A. W. Gorrie; captain, Air R. Ball ; vice-captain, Air D. F. Gorrie. The secretary reported that a system whereby the club for a levy of 2s 6d per member supplied all halls worked with great success. The question of erecting a volley-hoard is to be fully investigation by the committee.
