MAGISTRATE'S COURT.
TWO MEN CHARGED. Simon Knox, aged 23 and Samuel Te Matai, aged 28, both Maori labourers, of Rangiotu, appeared beforeMessrs M. A. Eliott and A. J. GraImm, J.R’s., in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday, the loimer w-s charged witli the theft, oil August 22 at Rangiotu, of a torch valued at ss, the property of Hope Lucas, and a pair of motoring gloves, valued at ss, the property ol Richard Hawk. Te Matai was charged with receiving the torch, knowing it to have been dishonestly obtained. Detect! vo-Sergaunt Riokeruike said Knox had taken the articles when lie attended a dance. Mr T. F. ReJling. who appeared for both accused, said Knox committed the offences while under the influence of drink. Te Matai simply took the torch to get rid of it, though this constituted receiving. Accused were convicted and ordered to come up for sentence within six
months, if called upon, an order being made for restitution. CHARGE WITHDRAWN. The police withdrew a charge against au engineer, aged 37, ol Eketahuna, or being deemed to be an idle and disorderly person, with insufficient lawful visible means of support. Senior-Sergeant Moriarty stated that accused lett his garage in Eketahuna five days before he was arrested and had wandered aimlessly along. Living apart from his wife and children, lie worked, ate, and slept in the garage, neglecting himself, and was on the verge of a nervous breakdown. He was a returned soldier and a war wound might have had something to do with the trouble. lie was not without money.
