Billows of smoke arising from the basement of the National Bank of New Zealand in Rangitikei Street, shortly before midday to-day, attracted considerable attention, a crowd quickly gathering. The services of the Fire Brigade were sought and a fireman made his way through the smoke to the furnace to throw it out of commission the task of invading the cellar without the assistance of a mask being a somewhat unenviable one. It appears that oil had got into the furnace, but with the plant being brought to a standstill and the application of some water, the flames were quenched without any structural damage resulting.
