FLOODING AT WHIROKINO.
ANOTHER REQUEST FOR HELP. AFFORESTATION NEAR FOXTON. (Bv Telegraph—Special to Standard.) AVELLINGTON, Sept. 12. The member for Alanawatu (Air J. Linklaterl took another opportunity during his Address-in-Reply speech in the House of Representatives to-night of urging the Government to induce the Alain Highways Board to take over the AVhirokino section of the main highway as a national road as it was quite impossible for the Alanawatu County to maintain this expensive section which was so oiten flooded. . Mr Linklater spoke appreciatively of the afforestation work now commencing at AVaitarere, stating that it would not only protect good land but provide valuable timber lor the future just where it would be needed, and would give work to a large number of men. The Harbour Board had endeavoured every year to plant some of the sand dunes, with the result that a forest had arisen which was going to be very, valuable in the future. There were many thousands of acres of sand dunes on the West Coast which would respond to similar efforts. At present they were of no value,’ but could be turned into a valuable asset to the country.
