. (From Our Own Correspondent.) ? WAIATA, Sept. 11. ■ The third birthday of the Waiata . Women’s Institute was held on Tuesday night in Mr Heneghan’s shed at Waiata, when a large crowd was present, and the function was celebrated with a jolly night of dancing, games, and musical items. Ali though the night was cold and damp all was done to make the shed as cosy and as warm as possible. The walk wore screened with foliage and flowers from the wattle trees, the golden clusters among tlie green transforming the whole appearance of the sited. Thu institute emblem, the primrose, was also used extensively, and io\cly little sprays of primroses and maiden-hair fern were worn by nearly all present, while the president (Mrs A. O. Simpson) was presented with a bouquet of the same modest little flower. Mrs IT. Miors and Miss A. Mulholland made cllicietit, M.C’s, and during the evening proceedings were enlivened considerably with the help of Mr W. Turner and Mr L. Wood (Feuding)— Mr Turner, with gymnastics and trick cyclo riding, although the limited floor spaeo and the high polish of the floor made the latter exhibition difficult, and Mr Wood with his generous contributions of humorous songs and monologues, for whicli Mr A. E. l J almcr. of I'oilding, acted as accompanist. The help rendered by theso gentlemen was much appreciated. Music for dancing was contributed by Mrs Red. sliaw. Miss J. Cousins, and Messrs Palmer, J. Dawson, IT. Wilson, and J. Henoghan. Prior to the supper interval Mrs Simpson presented the points prizes won during tho year, Miss Alice Mulholland securing i first, Mrs H. Miers second, and Miss Jeatij Rcdshaw third. A dainty little gift was I also presented to the secretary (Miss M. ! Brown), Mrs Simpson remarking that this' was a small token of appreciation of her work for the institute since its inception. Miss lfrown suitably replied, thanking all for the unexpected and much appreciated gift. The birthday cako was then cut by the president, while Mrs Brown and Mrs McLeod also assisted with this ceremony, ft was a lovely confection made and iced by Mrs Rcdshaw, who was accorded a hearty vote of thanks.* The icing was carried out in palest yellow, with ornamental work of lilies of tho valley, and primroses in icing, and it was surmounted by three primrose coloured candles. Several novelty dances were hold, tho lucky Gay Gordons being won by Miss E. True and Mr (J. Fitzwator, and the Monte Carlo by Miss D. Bridgoman, and Y. Gore. A. musical parcel was won by Mr B. Enright. A competition organised by Miss ITcncghan in aid of the Tennis Club funds was also drawn during the evening, with tho result that the substantial sum of over £4 was realised, ■ Mrs W. Davis (Rongotca) being tho winner of an embroidered cushion.
