SEALING AT HALCOMBE

CONTINGENT ON FINANCES. A request that consideration be given to abating the dust nuisance at Halcombe came before the Orona County Council, yesterday, when Messrs Anderson brothers, Halcombe, wrote again asking the council to give consideration to the question of sealing certain streets in Halcombe. Speaking to the letter Cr AV. McLennan said the dust nuisance was very bad at Halcombe and although he had informed the petitioners that the council had not estimated for this work he thought some consideration should be given to the request. The people at Halcombe felt they should receive the same treatment as other townships in the county, although in this respect he admitted that the streets concerned were not on a highway such as Ashhurst’s were. “Are they prepared to contribute anything towards the work?” asked the chairman (Cr A. Campbell). Cr McLennan thought there was not much chance of their doing so. The chairman felt that the council might be able to give some consideration to the request in the near future. He understood the work would cost about £SOO. Cr 0. McElroy pointed out that Halcombe did not pay much to the county by way of rates, but Cr T. Green asserted that the motor taxation paid by car owners, etc., in the settlement entitled them to some claims. Cr A. B. Shannon observed that it was rather a big job for a riding account to face and considered the local people should contribute something toward the cost. “I think the Highways Board should be asked to find something,” said Cr Green. “The board has absolutely no authority to spend money on anything but highways, which this piece of road is not,” stated the engineer It was finally agreed to reply stating that consideration would lie given to the request later in the year if the money were available, the engineer to prepare an estimate of the cost in the meantime
