RURAL BUSES.
(To the Editor.) Sir,—Mr T. W. Fitzgerald’s letter in your issue of Tuesday is certainly a revelation to patrons of the rural buses, but is the remedy not in the hands of the City Council? Are they going to allow the Transport Board to dictate to them in their own city? A point I noticed with the deputation to tho City Council by rural bus proprietors was that the speaker quoted tho municipal buses as going round the picture theatres to be at the nearest point to their passengers and used this in argument for tho retention of the present stand for rural passengers. Two rural buses only leave the stand after the pictures; should they not have equal opportunity for passengers from the nearest point? Would it not favour one service to let them depart at the present bus stand and the opposition service from the proposed new stand? The answer is obvious, Mr Editor, and I for one feel confident the City Council will give each service equal opportunities for business, and favours to none. It appears necessary to leave both services at their present point of departure or shift both.
Now regarding this talk of congestion on the stand. There is the same number of buses using the stand as those using it in 1930, but there is the difference that one service is keeping “reserve” buses on the stand on Saturday nights. Why not make these “reserve” buses use a different stand and only come on the present stand when required for actual use (which is very seldom)? —I am, etc., FEILDING TRAVELLER.
