WOMEN’S DIVISION FARMERS’ UNION.

The monthly meeting of- the Palmerston North branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union was held at Messrs Collinson and Cunninglmme’s yesterday afternoon. Mrs Niederer (president) extended a welcome to all present and welcomed a new member, Mrs L. Lovelock, and also Mrs Aynsley (president of the Halcombe branch who had taken up her residence in Palmerston North). Apologies were received from Mrs W. Howell and Mrs D. Buchanan. The secretarv ' was asked to write and convey the sympathy, of the branch to Mesdames W. Howell and

T. Close, both of whom were absent on account of illness. New members enrolled included Mrs H. Proctor and Mrs J. Veale, botn of Oroua Downs, and Miss Elder, of Palmerston North. Correspondence included a letter from the secretary of the provincial executive asking tlie branch to elect a member to represent it on a committee to act with the provincial executive in staging a display at the forthcoming summer Show, as outlined in a circular letter. It has been decided that some unique idea should be put into the display, such as (1) a tableau depicting a farm scene; (2) a bedroom, the furnishings being typical of New Zealand produce; (3) a drawing-room furnished with antiques. Mrs Niederer was appointed to represent the branch on this committee. The secretary also received intima-. tion of a new by-rule that bad been passed at the provincial meeting on July 20 and which reads as follows: “That a member may act on two branch committees, but must exercise lrer vote in only one branch, the op-, tion of which branch remains with the member herself.” _ A letter was received from Mr L. O Hooker, honorary organiser for the 1935-36 health stamp campaign, soliciting the support of the branch in this worthy cause, and the secretary was authorised to purchase health stamps for tire branch correspondence during one month (September). The secretary reported that a pair of hand knitted sox, made and donated bv Mrs Eismg, bad been won by Mrs Jerfnings, who had very kindly donated them back for a further competition. It was agreed to finalise this, and tlie cake competition at the next meeting. An appreciation of services rendered bv the branch in sending a housekeeper to a country home was received in a letter from a grateful employer. Cards expressing thanks were also received from several families who nau suffered bereavements, and who had received letters of sympathy from the branch. It was agreed to hold a special general meeting at the committee room on September 20 to comxdete the business of the meeting’. Mrs Niederer introduced Mr \V. J. Paul who gave a most interesting talk and demonstration on knitting. He explained in a very capable manner various methods of dealing with the intricacies of plain and fancy knitting. At its conclusion Mr Paul was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. The secretary reminded members that this being book month for the book club, Mrs AV. J. Croucher would l>e ready to receive parcels of books, weeklies, etc., for dispatch to Wanganui which is the headquarters of the book club. Mrs Hobbs (Oroua Downs) consented to act as correspondent this month to two ladies in the Nelson district who were enrolled as “lone members” of the division.
