WOMEN’S INSTITUTES.
DRAMA FESTIVAL AT OTAKI. The second annual drama festival of the Wellington District Federation of Women’s Institutes was started this week, the first series of plays being staged at the Cosy Theatre, Otaki, on Wednesday. The standard of both plays and production showed considerable improvement, and the judge, Miss Hardinge-Maltby, said she was very pleased with the quality of the performances. She mentioned as outstanding the performances of Mrs Woods, Tawa Flat, in “Potatoes.” and Miss Cotter. Manakau, as the maid in “Cupid in the Kitchen.” At the close of the evening Miss Maltby placed the plays presented in the following order : —l, “Drought,” bv the Otaki Women’s Institute, with Mrs A. Bills as Ellie, and Mr Tooby as Joe; 2. “Mrs Watson’s Window,” Paraparaumu Women’s Institute; 3, “The Spinsters of Lushe,” Plimmerton Women’s Institute; and she highly commended “The New Parson,” an original plav by Mrs Richardson, performed by Tawa Flat No. 1 ; “Dance Macabre,” Porirua Women’s Institute; and “Potatoes,” Tawa Flat No. 2.
