(From Our Own Correspondent.) AOKAUTERE, Aug. 26. Tho tree planting ceremony in connection with tho Arbor Day celebrations was field at the school on Wednesday last, when members of the . committee were present, it had been decided to plant an English tree, in commemoration of the King's Jubilee year. A particularly fine specimen of a weeping elm "as purchased, and after the children had been given a short explanation by Air Craven on the significance of Arbor Day and the rea otts for planting the Jubilee tree, Air Chowon (chairman) called upon the two youngest pupils in the school, Joan Atkinson . and Beryl Chowon, to plant tho tree. It is to be known as the Jubilee elm and has been planted in the centre of t lie lawn fronting tho school. All tho children present helped with tho filling in, and so have a personal interest in the tree. The children of the Fitzhcrbcrt East School presented their annual concert on Friday, assisted by the Drama Circle of tho Women's Institute. The hall was packed, and every item received wellmerited applause. The .programme opened with the National Anthem, followed by “God Defend New Zealand.” Fay and Ftancis Fairbrother pleased the audience with a recitation, “The Cuckoo.” This item was not on tho original programme, but as Hazel Lankshear who was to have given the item, had bcoomo ill, this was substituted. Three old English songs, “Drink to Ale Only,” “Early One Morning,” and “Sweet and Low,” sung by the senior pupils, followed. “I he Dream Alan,” song in costume and with actions by tho junior pupils, was well received; “Whiskers,” a reading by Bovalene tlreves, caused great amusement; two English folk dances “Gathering l’oascods” and “Sollenger's Round,” by the girls, were well performed; while a further action song by the primer pupils, entitled “Jack nnti Jill,” was loudly applauded. Wilfred Clausen’s recitation, “'Lite Boy Decides” followed, and was wt 11 received. The final item on the children’s part of the programme was a pianoforte solo by Joyce Kristonsen, who had to respond to an cncoru for her delightful playing. After the interval, Mr Torstonson obliged with a vocal item with guitar accompaniment, being loudly applauded. The Drama Circle then presented their onc-aot play entitled “April Showers,” by Philip Johnson. The cast was as follows: —Aliss Charlotte, Airs D. Scott; Phoebe, Miss E. Anderson. Aliss Lactitia Airs A. Iv. Groves; Alias Alicia, Airs K. W. Field; Miss Rosie, Airs 1,. Craven; Aliss Lucy, Aliss Nita Brill. The play was exceedingly well present ed and reflects great credit on the players concerned and on Airs D. Scott, the producer. After supper, the hall was cleared for dancing, the music being supplied by Aliases G. Lawrence and J. Burling and Messrs A. Lawrence, R. Brill und L. Craven. Novelty dances were won by Mrs Orr and Air Groves, while the Lucky Gay Gordons was won by Aliss C. Graven and Air Iv. W. Field. The competition winners were Mr Waugh (Palmerston North) and Air A. Durden, "ho generously re-donated tho prize to the school funds. Dining the evening, Air N. C. Chowen (chairman of the School Committee) expressed thanks to Miss Baird and Air Craven for their work in the training of the pupils for tho concert; to the Women’s Institute, to Mr Torstonson and to all who had donated prizes or helped in any way towards tho success of the evening. The dancing was continued until, a late hour, Mr M. Kristonsen making a very efficient AI.C. The school broke up on' Friday for the second term vacation, and will re-open on September 9 Aliss K Baird is spending the vacation with relatives in Nelson.
