HIGH APPOINTMENT

MR G. A. AGGETT, OK CARNARVON

(From Our Own Correspondent.) HONGOTEA, Aug. 26.

The many friends of Air G. A. Aggett will be gratified to learn that he has received notification of his appointment to the position of head gardener ut Government House, Wellington, the residence of Their Excellencies Lord and Lady Galway, and will commence his new duties immediately. During the past sixteen jears .Mr Aggett has been in the service of the laro Air J. K. AJcKolvie, who passed away recently. and mainly due to his efforts he caused the gardens connected with the AieKelvio estate to be held in envy in gardening circles. A native of Tcignmouth, Devon, Air Aggett received a sound Training in the various branches of horticulture and wan employed in the gardens of the Duke of Fife, the Afarquis of Ripon, and other notable estates. Coming to New Zealand, he lived for some time in Napier and intimately came to this district, and during the intervening years has applied himself with energy and enthusiasm to advancing gardening knowledge in the community, being always ready to give the benefit of his wide experience to amateurs needing advice in horticultural matters. He held the office of president of the Hongotea Horticultural Society for two years and has been called on to act as judge in fruit, flower anil vegetable sections at many of the principal shows throughout the North Island. Those who frequent the A. and I*. Winter Shows ’at I’a merston North will remember the magnificent group of vegetables there displayed—considered by many to be the finest ever shown in the Do minion. These superb collections wore grown in the late Air McKelvie’s gardens, and displayed the skill Mr Aggett bad attained as a cultivator and exhibitor.

At the meeting of the Hongotea Horticultural Society this evening, Airs \\ ill presiding, it was moved by Air Glover and seconded by Airs Cavcrhill, that the members heartily congratulate Air Aggett on his appointment as head gardener at Government House, and wisli him every success. The motion was carried by acclamation.
