EVEREST EXPEDITION.

CLIMB OF 21,000 FEET. The Calcutta correspondent of the London Times telegraphs:—A letter dated June 21 reports that the Everest advance expedition at Sar, in Tibet, have just returned from a 10day trip to the Nyonno Ri range in general, working from camps 17,00011 to 20,000 ft high. Their highest climb was about 21,500 ft, involving three or four hours of step-cutting. The health of the party is good, except that Mr Tilman was affected by the height for a day or two and Mr Spender, the surveyor, is ill, probably with dysentery. The letter includes a tribute to the porters, “a remarkable set wlio carry 401 b to 501 b loads up some colossal hill to a moraine, then set to work with immense pleasure to flatten a site for tents while the mere sahibs are exhausted with carrying themselves up —and are always cheerful, too.”

A small party under the leadership of Mr Eric Sliipton is making a reconnaissance ol tho western approaches to Mount Everest in preparation for the main expedition, which is to start in the spring under the leadership of Mr Hugh Ruttledge.
