WHEELBARROW DERBY.
Whilst the usual cry at a racecourse when the starter lets tlio field away is “They’re off!” it may be oti Saturday that the cry will be •‘They’re out!” Let us hope, however, that the passengers in the wheelbarrow race will keep their scats. The pace will bo on from the time 1 lie field gets away until it readies the winning post at the Showgrounds. The City Council’s modern “high-powered barrows with free-wheel escapement, back-peddling brakes, and cushion tyres” are fast on the flat, and as there will be no windscreens the passengers are looking forward to a calm day. There will be no second dividend; the whole of flip stakes and the totalizator returns, if any go to the I nlmerston North Central Relief Committee. This is the classic race of the year and is attracting considerable interest. amongst, lovers of racing throughout the district, and is a fitting preliminary to tbe great bill ot fare provided by the Manawalii Rugby Union on tlicir Charity l'ootball Day.
