FRIEND TO THE MAORI.
LORD GALAVAY’S PROMISE. Per Press Association. HASTINGS, Julv 18. “I promise that while in New Zealand 1 will do my utmost to be a. true friend to the Maori people, and I will encourage in every way possible development schemes bringing prosperity to them,” said His Excellency the Governor-General, Lord Gahvav. at a ceremony this afternoon at Omaliu Pa, when he unveiled a memorial to the late Taranaki Te Ua. There wore present at the ceremony groups of Natives, numbering about 2000. from the Taranaki, AA’airarapa. East Coast, Bay of Plenty, Wanganui, King Country and Urewera districts. His Excellency was also present today at a civic reception at Napier, where lie laid the foundation-stone of the new Art Gallery and addressed school children. To-morrow lie will receive a civic welcome at Hastings in the morning and proceed south immediately after.
