EARTH TREMORS.
IN TAUPO DISTRICT. Per Press Association. ROTORUA, July 16. Commencing shortly before 11 o’clock on Monday night, a series of sharp earthquake shocks alarmed residents of Taupo. No damage is reported. The shocks were accompanied by subterranean rumblings, which seemed to proceed across' the lake. ' , A number of slips were brought down in the Hatepe Gorge, between Taupo and Tokaanu, but the road was cleared by 10 o’clock to-day and traffic was able to proceed. Two slips also partially blocked the road in the vicinity of Wairakei, but these also were quickly cleared. The shocks were not felt at Rotorua.
