WILLARD HOME AND FREE AMBULANCE. Two matters concerning Palmerston North came before the last meeting of tho Levin Borough Council, when the Mayor (Mr P. W. Goldsmith) presided. The Willard Home Board wrote soliciting a small annual subsidy from the council. The Mayor considered that the council could not give its support to an organisation outside the borough. On the motion of Cr. F. E. Parker, seconded by Cr. D. P. Todd, tho letter was received. The Palmerston North District Free Ambulance asked the council to extend the service a grant.
Tlie Mayor drew attention to an item on tho sheet of accounts for payment, where the second quarterly contribution of £176 18s 4d to the Palmerston North Hospital Board was due. The speaker stated that lie took it that the board was responsible for the ambulance service and as long as the council had to contribute towards that he did not think it could make any grant to a private enterprise. He believed that the Free Ambulance had done a great deal of good work, hut did not think the council would he justified in supporting the request. On the motion of Cr. Todd the communication was received.
