PARS AND PERSONALITIES.
AMONG THE PLAYERS. (By ‘'Cross Bar.”) Horowhenua have now adopted the old Manawhenua colours, and the blue jersey with red and white bars recalled memories of other days to the Palmerston North spectators present at Levin on Saturday. The coach and selector to the Horowhenua team is H. Jacob, who had the honour of leading Manawhenua to victory when they captured the Ranfurly Shield from Wairarapa in that memorable “forlorn” hope, while the man in charge of the “supply hag” was none other than Meta Johnson, another who <1 id yeomen service for the southern and combined unions. It has keen noticed at recent matches locally, more particularly on the oval, that club coaches have been filling the dual rolo of linesman-coach. It would he preferable for the referees in control to select independent linesmen, for it would not he “cricket” for a linesman to take advantage of his proximity to the play to direct the operations of his team. Team captains have the right to protest to the referee and ask for the removal of any offering linesman, and it would bo preferable to avoid such a delicate position arising. Two of the leading clubs in Dominion football tasted defeat on Saturday, Wellington College Old Boys being beaten by Athletic, while University went down to Southern in Dunedin. When Varsity and Southern met previously, the latter club were without Hore and Simon, although the former did take the field in the closing stages of the game. The pair had been in .Wellington for the trial games and, in an endeavour to turn out for their club on the Saturday, undertook a rush trip by motor car from Christchurch to Dunedin, only to arrive too late to take the field at the start of the match. It is reported from Auckland that B. A. Killeen, the former Wellington representative, was approached recently by an ex-Rugby player on the question of transferring to League. Killeen indicated that he was not interested. Auckland will he called upon to withstand two more challenges for the Ranfurlv Shield before Southland gets a tilt as it on September 7. Canterbury play Auckland on August 10, and Hawke’s Bay challenge oil August 31. Otago will play Auckland on September 14.
