ROAD AT ASHHURST

* DEVIATION PROPOSAI

Claiming that it would shorten tii, distance troin Feilding to the M an ._ watu Gorge by one mile and, further do away with a bad bend on the pr.' sent road, Air R. Johnson, of Am;. hurst, wrote to the Feilding Chamlx-c of Coinnicrce, the letter being recei . 'ed last night, asking it to support ,i proposal he had made to the Oroui County Council to have a small den. ation of five or six chains made which would eliminate two bad bends, the bend at Asbluirst being an acute one, with a stiff grade and of considerable distance. Further, the writerstated, that there had been a suffered road on the proposed deviation for

40 years, and although every farmer on the Grove Road and Harrison's I Line had been aware of this, nothing had ever been done in the way or creating interest in the deviation. Mr Johnson hoped for the chamber’s support to his proposal. The president said the proposal con- ; cerned a road which it was suggested (Should be cut to obviate a sharp bend and come out about three-quarters of a mile above the Ashhurst railwaystation. The request had been laid before the Oroua County Council and the speaker understood that the county engineer bad an investigation of the proposal in hand. In Air Eliott’s opinion the chamber could very well sujv. !>oi-t Air Johnson’s, proposal, for it appeared that it offered certain advantages. He moved that the chamber

support the proposal. Mr A« J. Kellow suggested that a deputation to the Oroua County Council by the chamber would carry mors weight than passing a mere resolution. He moved an amendment that the president and Messrs T. Collins and G. J. Fitzpatrick wait on the council to further the matter. Air E. Fair suggested that the chamber await the decision of the Oroua County Council on the proposal. He understood that there were certain objections, such as the presence or not of a surveyed road at tne spot. Mr C. A. Hausmann said he frequently travelled over the road to the Gorge, and thought the proposed deviation would obviate an awkward corner. He supported the project. The president said he would withdraw his motion, Air Kellow’s motion then being carried without further discussion.
