LAST WEEK’S BUSINESS AND BRICES.

Active conditions ruled in the stock and sluuo markets last week and a substantial volume of trailin'; was recorded in all centres, business being spread over a wide range of securities. The general tone of tlio markets was linn, but sonic issues showed irregular movements and a tew developed a weak tendency. Government loans were well held and business was rather restricted. The 4 per cent, issues did the bulk of the recorded business at firm rates. Trailing in local body and company debentures was confined mainly to Auckland. Bank shares were more active than, for some time past, business developing substantially. TSew Zealand displayed a slightly easier tendency. Commercial of Australia declined on sales to 15s 2d, with a. slight recovery on Saturday. Union of Australia made a sharp advance late in the week, selling to £8 1 (s, an advance ot 2s to 2s 6d on the week. Australasia improved to £ll ss, and E.S. and A. Bank to £5 Is. New South Wales moved up to £3l 7s 6d, National of Australasia, £5 pain to £6 6s 6d arid tire £lO paid to £l2 14s. National of Now Zealand showed little change at 67s to 67s 6d. Reserve Bank were lirmly traded at up to £6 15s. Insurance issues were firmly held and busTiioss was restricted. New Zealand advanced to 71s 3d. In the financial and pastoral section Goldsbrough Mort weakened from 30s 6d to 29s 3d, and Now Zealand Loan and Mercantile to £32 10s, New Zealand Guarantee Corporation were firm at 5s 8d to 5s 9£d. Union Steam preference were freer sellers at 27s 6d. Pukcmiro Coal firmed from 23s 9d to 255. Taupiri sold at 17s, anti Westport (deal at 21s 6d. Weakness continued i:i New Zealand Breweries, which declined on heavy selling from 54s 6d to 52s 2d, witli a slight improvement on Saturday to 52s Bd. Tooths were firm and active up to sis. later business being done at 52s 6d. New Zealand Refrigerating were traded at 20s to 20s 2d, anti the 10s paid at 9s. Kauri Timber moved up to 20s. Miscellaneous industrial and trading issues were most active, trading covering a wide range. Dun-lop-Pordi iau were heavily sold on a weak market down to 15s 9d, with a late recovery to 16s 3d, Broken Hill Proprietary moved up to 58s. and were slightly easier at the close. Electrolytic Zinc wore actively trailed, the preference to 35s 3d aim the ordinaries to 26s 6tl. British Tobacco were inclined to case, late sales being made at 38s 6d and 38s stl. Colonial Sugar weakened from £4l 5s to £4O 17s 6ti. Now Zealand Drug were firmer on a sale at 81s 3d. Mount Lyell reacted to the firm ness of copper anti recovered to 21s, Wooltvorths (N.Z.) were done at £ll 5s and £ll 2s 6<l and the preference at 40s 4d to 40s 6tl. Woolworths (Sydney) advanced to 90s and Woolworths (\V. Australia) sold at £6 ss. In rile mining section Wailu were active sellers at 41s 6d down to 40s 3d.
