RUGBY REFEREES

ASSOCIATION’S REPORT. Although the association’s membership had not been as great as in previous years, the 1934 season had proved successful, says the annual report of the Manawatu Rugby Referees’ Association. The enthusiasm and the interest of the association’s members were keenly maintained during the season. The association lost two valued members through transfers to other districts, they being Messrs Cantwell and White. Two other members, Messrs Duthie and Akuira, qualified for their certificate from the New Zealand Council and the association congratulated them on their success. The balance-sheet showed a credit of 12s 4d, the smallness of the amount being attributable to the increased cost of travelling necessitated through a serious decline in the association’s membership at Feilding. Toward the end of the season a team from the members' of the association had visited Pahiatua to play a match with the Bush Rugby Referees’ Association team, the contest ending in a draw. The members making the visit had been received in a most hospitable manner. Thanks were due to the association’s president for his energetic endeavours to improve the members’ knowledge of the rules; to Mr Low for his capable service as delegate to the Manawatu Rugby Union ; to the Rugby Union for generous financial assistance; to the appointments board for very satisfactory work; to members for their support during the year; to Mr F. C. Campbell for auditing the association’s books, and to the Press.
