AUTUMN BLOOMS

SHOW AT RONGOTEA. HIGH STANDARD MAINTAINED. Demonstrating again the widespread popularity of the fixture, the autumn show of the Rongotea and District Horticultural and General Produce Society, which was staged yesterday, drew a large number of entries from a wide area. The numbers received for the various sections reflected the dry season experienced, but where there was a d_ecreasc in one section an increase in another largely made up the deficiency. The vegetable and farmers’ classes were not as well patronised as they were at the last autumn show, but, while the number of entries received for the cut flowers section about held their own, the domestic classes showed an appreciable increase. The dahlia classes brought forth some very fine specimens, the champion bloom being a “Kathleen Norris,” entered by Mr G. R. Boswell, of Feilding, who enjoyed considerable success in the judging. The total mum her of entries was 370 as against 400 for last year’s autumn show. Commenting on the cut flowers, the judge (Mr A. J. Shailer, of Palmerston North) said ho had been very pleased with the general standard, while the winning blooms had been of outstanding quality. The other judges were as follow :—Decorative and domestic classes, Miss Scott and Mrs Gibbons, Carnarvon ; fruit, vegetables and farm produce, Mr G. A. Aggett,, Carnarvon ; art and fancy work, Mrs O. In introducing Mr W. G. Black, who declared the show officially open, Mrs A. J. Will, the president, expressed her thanks to the judges, the exhibitors and the stewards. First voicing his pleasure at being invited to open the show, Mr Black commented that he had been able to meet a number who had worked hard in the Rongotea district on the occasion of the Palmerston North queen carnival about a year ago. He touched on the development of the classification of plants and their naming, . theso remarks being reported elsewhere.
