ECONOMIC CONDITIONS.

Preaching in the Cuba Street Methodist Church on Sunday, on the occasion of the annual harvest services, Rev. H. L. Richards scathingly denounced the wilful sabotage of goods which has taken place in various parts of the world in recent times when millions of human beings are perishing for want of those very things. “I impeach this ghastly procedure,” said the preacher. “I impeach it along with the system that demands such a thing to ensure its continuance, and I impeach them both in the name of God„ and of our common humanity. What' blasphemy is this,” said he, “that attributes our present distresses to ‘an act,of God?’ Are not our granaries overflowing. ■ are not our warehouses bulging with goods and our markets glutted? Is not the: rapid mechanisation of industrial processes placing more and ever more consumable goods into our hands? Can anybody say we are ‘poor’ in the true sense of the' word? And yet we are asked to accept the proposition that our destitution is due to the will of God! It is monstrous and blasphemous and I for one will not accept ft. Neither will I -take the situation lying down, but to the utmost of my powers will denounce any system that calls . forth such tiling, and will leave no stone unturned to spread confusion over the face of those who endeavour to justify it.” There was a large congregation and the forceful and earnest words of the preacher were followed- with rapt' attention.
