TOWN AND COUNTRY

CRICKET AT WELLINGTON. MANAWATU MEN PROMINENT. WELLINGTON, March 4. The Country representatives are in a commanding position as the result of Saturday’s play in the annual Town v. Country cricket match at the Basin Reserve, Wellington. The visitors, who had lost two wickets for 76 runs on Friday in their first innings, in reply to the Town’s score of 259, were all out for 308 on Saturday. The Country fast bowlers, E. Christensen (Taranaki) and R. J. Hatch (Manawatu) bowled to such purpose that the City side, facing a deficit of 49, had to fight hard for runs in its second innings, and had lost six wickets for 131 when the day’s play concluded.

H. E. Re any (Hawke’s Bay) and M. A. J. O’Brien (Hawke’s Bay) gave the visitors a good start off i:n the morning, the former scoring 52 and O’Brien 73 in a 127 third wicket partnership. This was followed by a valuable 68 by N. Galliehan (Manawatu). W. Trieklebank (University) took the bowling honours for Town with five wickets for 6y.

The City men commenced their second innings very inauspiciously alter tea. and at one stage they had fonr wickets down for 32 —before the Country’s first innings lead had been overtaken. However, a splendid innings by J. Eli (Wellington) for 66 not out, in some measure relieved the position. Galliehan, not out 14, and Lambert, not out 12, resumed batting after lunch. Tricldebank’s second ball bowled Lambert. 193 —6—17. His total included one six. Hatch joined Galliehan, and played out the over, which was a maiden wicket. Hobbs joined Galliehan,. 3-. not out, when 21 runs were required by Country to reach Town’s first innings total of 259. With three wickets in hand the visitors had every chance of getting the score required. Hobbs did not last long, failing to survive an appeal for l.b.w. off Lamason 243—8—3. Barker was next man in and continued to force the pace, punishing Blundell in the following over when he drove him to long-on boundary. Country equalised Town s score when Barker got Blundell away for a single at 2.45 p.m. Galliehan took the score into the 260’s with a two oft the same bowler.
