RANGITIKEI.
MARTON, Feb. 13. The Marton District High School met last evening, Mr H. J. howler presiding. The financial statement presented by the treasurer showed that after all accounts had been paid and allowance made for the caretaker’s salary, there would be a sum of approximately £6 in hand to carry the committee on until the next grant was due in May. The headmaster, Mr H. Leon Wilson, reported, inter alia.: —School reopened on February o, with good attendances in both departments, though the primary roll shows a further fall of 13, bringing it down to 2G4, which will make it difficult to maintain our present grade. The secondary department has a roll of 102, which removes any danger of a reduction of staff for the present. An unsatisfactory feature in connection with our secondary department this year is the number of pupils who are going to Feilding for courses similar to those carried on here. A pleasant evening was spent at the Methodist Parsonage when members of the choir took the opportunity of welcoming Mr and Mrs N. L. Shelton. The members of the Marton Junction Women’s Institute met on Wednesday, Mrs Bush being the chairwoman. An interesting demonstration of wool work was given by Mrs Moss, of Marton Junction, who displayed several beautiful cushions as examples of the handicraft. The hostesses were ■ Mesdames Waters, Szepanski (2), Sayers, Mitchell, Webby, True and Miss B. Purnell. The competitions were judged by Mrs Purnell and resulted:—Pikelets, Mrs Dixon 1, Mrs Watts 2 and 3; novelty article, Mi's Watts 1, Miss Hoffman 2, Mrs H. Williams 3. Mrs J. Kendrick rendered two vocal solos and Miss Taafe pianoforte solos. Mr and Airs Frank Fullerton-Smith, Upper Tutaenui, are visiting Tokaanu, Lake Taupo.
