STATE UNDERTAKINGS.

IN NEW SOUTH WALES. The report of the New South Wales Auditor-General (Mr John Spence) on State business and industrial uuder*••>!>inns for the year ended June 30 last was tabled in Parliament recently, i ievenue of most of the undertakings showed a groat improvement compared with the previous year. Mr Spence said that the railways accounts showed an improvement ot £772.354, the net deficit being £2,588,126. The gross earnings, including the Government’s contribution of £BOO,OOO, totalled £15,690,185, of which £11,203,519 was absorbed in operating expenses and cost of administration. This left £4,486,666 available to meet interest charges and other expenses amounting to £7,074,792. ’the accounts of the railway refreshment rooms showed a net profit of £5331, an improvement of £16,093 on the previous year. The results of the tramway operations showed an improvement of £37,454, the net surplus being £39,373. A surplus of £5105 was shown ill the State bus operations. The income from the trams was £3,026,962. The passengers carried on the trains numbered 277,345.142, as compared with 276,735,729 the previous year. The income of the Department of Main Roads was greater by £352,432 than the previous year. It totalled £2,510,370. The Hawkesbury River ferry showed a surplus of £7002. A surplus of £16,315 was made by the Sydney Harbour Trust. HARBOUR BRIDGE. The earnings of the Sydney Harbour Bridge amounted to £406,061, and maintenance costs were £25,540. Revenue was made up as follows:Road tolls, £174,449; contributions for railway passengers, £75,000; tramway contributions, £50,000, councils’ contributions, £101,037; rents from resumed properties, £5565; miscellaneous, £9. The contributions from the councils the previous year amounted to £353,653. The decrease for the year under review was attributable to the application of the reduced rate of one third of a penny in the £ for the whole year. The aggregate revenue of the Metropolitan Water Board amounted to £2,456,288, the gross surplus being £1,802,685. The Port Ivembla electricity supply disclosed an operating surplus of £40,443. Tlie total earnings of the Metropolitan Meat Industry Commission amounted to £452,184, compared with £511,577 the previous year. The expenditure was £318,540. The accumulated loss to December. 31, 1933, on the Walsh Island dockyards was £276,142. The sales from the State brickworks fell by £11,373. Thev amounted to £22.344. The year’s loss on the Murrumbidgee irrigation areas was £195,743, the total losses now being £7,320,240.
