HOUSING BILL
AN AMBITIOUS MEASURE. BRITAIN’S FORWARD STEP. Received January 18, 11.35 a.m. LONDON, Jan. 17. Britain’s great slum clearance scheme appears in the text of the Housing Bill. involving ambitious plans for dealing with overcrowding and the redeveloping of centres in the residential districts in large congested towns. The measure seeks, without delay, to provide accommodation without undue disturbance to large populations. at rents within the scope of wage earners. The Bill legally defines overcrowding and provides for a penalty of £5 plus £3 for each day the overcrowding continues. The big subsidies envisaged include at least £6 yearly per flat for 40 years from the State, plus £5 from tho local authority.
