TROTTING NOTES.

FROM FOREIGN STABLES. Ideal, who declined his engagement in the Gracefield Trial Handicap at Hutt Park on Saturday, is a four-year-old gelding by Rev de Ow from Logan Maid, and is trained by L. O. Thomas. He has yet to win a race, but ho is spoken of as a very promising young pacer. His darn,. Logan Maid, won a number of races, and is by Logan Pointer from Bold Maid by Bolderwood —Black Prince mare. At the conclusion of the racing in Auckland, Blue Mountain wan left in the care of S. M. August, and he was taken to the Hutt Park meeing by tho northern mentor. It is stated that should the grey gelding show anything like his beet form ho will rejoin L. A. Maiden’s team in the south. Blue Mountain had two outings for a second and it remains to be seen what will be done with him. Sans Pour, the good-looking Rey de Oro filly, won a ruce at the Roefton meeting, but she could not have proved more than a paying proposition on tho trip. She foil once, broko up badly in another race, and paced like a good one in her winning effort. Sans Petir lias plenty of speed, but is a bit temperamental. She has net done much racing and may improve after she gets experience. As a result of her win at Hutt Park on Saturday, Silver do Oro has been penalised 12 yards in the Royal Handicap at Addington, and will start from 36 yards behind. Mountain Dell’s penalty of 12 yards will bring her to 48 yards behind in the Sandringham Handicap Auburn Lad proved a big disappointment to his owner-trainer, W. McKay, at Auckland, and the pacer apparently lost all form by the time serious racing commenced. Though nominated for the W indsor Handicap at Addington on Saturday, Auburn Lad is an unlikely starter.

Royal Travis, a winner at the Roefton Jockey Club’s meeting, is a three-year-old gelding by Travis Axworthy—Mercedes, tho latter a mare imported from America at a big price by Mr R. Hudson, who bred Royal Travis. Mercedes, who was by Peter Clienault —Esperanza, was not much good on the race track, and her only performance was to run second to Manhattan in tho Trotting Stakc6 at Forbury Park in 1928. For a period she was trained at Addington by W. J. Tompkinson. Mercedes is a full-sister to Dolores, and one of the best-bred mares imported to New Zealand. Sage King showed that he is a good horse by tho way he won the Intermediate Handicap at Greymouth after having all the bad luck of the rnco. He drew No. 1 position at the barrier and stood like a statue waiting for his opponents to lino up. Grace McElwvn plaved up badly and delayed the start. When the barriers were released Sage King seemed to bo asleep, and could not get going. Ho lost five lengths and was back in sixth place when the field had settled down. Ho made up his ground in good style, and, catching the leader at the top of the straight, he came on to win easily. Sage King has been a model of consistency and ho will soon win again. It is a long time since there has boon such a promising trotter as Te Kahu in Auckland, and the Nelson Bingen gelding promises to develop into a high-class sauarcgniter (says the Auckland Star). He was only raced on one occasion at the Auckland mooting, in tho Oak Handicap, on the second day, in which he stood the limit horses up 48yds. Beginning smartly, he was not doing his best in the run home to win by three lengths. Te Kahu is a four-year-old gelding by Nelson Bingen from Lottie Audubon, being a full-brother to Superfine and a half-brother to that brilliant pacer Pegaway. Last season To Kahu started on five occasions for two firsts and a second. His owner, Mr J. T. Young, should enjoy a very succeosful season with the bay trotter. ’Subsidy, the winner of the Great Northern Derby, was got by Rey do Oro from Lady Brent, by Brent Locanda- —Ludy John, by Advance from a Rothschild mare. Advance was got by Prince Imperial . from Rose, bv General Tracey from Phyllis, by Borlin from a mare by tho thoroughbred horse Quicksilver. Prince Imperial was got by Hambletonian Bell Boy from Princess, by Dexter, a son of Traducor, from a Prick Willow mare. It will be seen that in common with other smart pacers Subsidy inherits a good deal of thoroughbred blood through his dam. G. Withers, who rode Marie Louise into third place in tho President’s Handicap at Greymouth. is the 16-year-old son of the Yaldhurst trainer, D. A. Withers. The young horseman has always shown a natural ability in the. saddle and under his father’s tuition ho will have every chance to become a proficient rider. There is a feeling among trotting folk that saddle horses are neglected by the majority of clubs, and the inolusion of events of this class would be welcomed by many. It would also encourage horsemanship which is becoming a lost art on trotting courses, so far as the saddle is concerned.
