SIXPENNY LOTTERY.

TWO DEFENDANTS FINED. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, Jan. 16. With the object of raising funds for some new courts the Eastern Hutt Tennis Club commenced a lottery of sixpenny tickets for a Christmas hamper, but the police stopped it a week after the tickets went out and when only about £22 had come in. Charges of commencing a lottery were laid, defendants being A. G. T. Smith and It. Upton. Both were described by counsel in the Magistrate’s Court today as respectable members of the community. It was explained that this was the first lottery ever held by the club and it was thought as it was for a sporting or charitable object, it was unnecessary to get permission from the Minister of Internal Atfairs. Each was fined £l.
