UNDERWORLD’S NEW CRY. When the metropolitan Commissioner of Police, Lord Trenchard, took over control of .Scotland Yard, he ordered a comb-out of London’s underworld, and criminals and gangs of criminals which had lived there securely ' for years were forced to leave. The Brighton police have long been aware that many of these u'ndesirables had fled there, but the public has only recently been startled into recognition of Brighton’s low life by two trunk murders. For one of these Tony Mancini has just been found not guilty; nobody has been arrested for the first trunk crime. So both are unsolved. During the investigations, which are still continuing, and in which Scotland Yard took part, some startling revelations were made. Men whom the Yard had thought had escaped to the Continent were found in Brighton, and one authority estimates that there are at least 1500 people now living in the underworld of this seaside resort whose records are on the file at Scotland Yard. Drug traffickers are among the chief criminal element at Brighton, and the town’s easy access to the Continent makes their trade more simple.
