TARANAKI PIONEER

NEW PLYMOUTH SETTLEMENT.

NEW PLYMOUTH, Nov. 20.

Ninety-two years ago yesterday, on November 19, 1842, the ship Blenneim arrived at New Plymouth with pioneer settlers from Plymouth. England, the voyage having occupied 140 days. Of the Blenheim's passengers, the only survivor to-day is Mrs Mary Hamerton, the widow of Mr It. 0. Hamerton, who is at present residing at Kelburn, Wellington. Mrs Hamerton is the only surviving passenger of the six ships despatched by the Plymouth company with colonists for the settlement of New Plymouth between 1840 and 1842. She recently celebrated her 95th birthday. Yesterday the Mayor of New Plymouth (Mr E. It. C. Gilmour), sent a message of congratulation, on behalf of the citizens of the town, and many friends also sent congratulatory telegrams.
