AMATEUR GOLF.
FIRST ROUND AT MELBOURNE. MELBOURNE, Nov. 19. First round results in the amateur golf championship are: — R. Smith (Victoria) beat J. Ferrier (N.S.W.), 4 and 3. J. McLean (Britain) beat M. J. Ryan (Victoria), 5 and 4. A. V. Rae (Victoria) beat L. G. Garnett (Britain), 6 and 5. A. W. Jackson (Victoria) beat W. R. Dobson (N.S.W.). 6 and 5. H. R. Payne (Victoria) beat F. E. Headlam, 3 and 2. H. W. Hattersley (N.S.W.) beat Ivo Whitton (Victoria), 3 and 2. Hon. Michael Scott (Britain) beat W. S. Rymill (South Australia), 1 up. H. L. Williams (Victoria) beat L. D. Hardie at the forty-first. Excitement died away at the Metropolitan links after the stirring events of the open championship last week. The first round in the amateur match play over 36 holes was played to-day, but the huge crowd was missing. The few who attended were mainly interested in McLean, the brilliant Scottish champion, who played Ryan. McLean, who swung beautifully, hit his iron shots perfectly and came in to lunch leading by one hole. Ryan proved a redoubtable opponent and took the lead at the fourteenth. Ryan, however, was troubled by bunkers and missed putts, and finally lost. Scott had a single hole lead on Rymill at the half-way mark. Rymill then began scratchy play, frequently hooking his tee shots. Recovering to all square at the twenty-eighth, lie made an exciting finish, Scott winning one up after bad luck at several holes.
Though a trifle unsteady, Rae, the 20-year-old Victorian left-hander, defeated Garnett. He took an invincible lead in the early afternoon and was never after headed. A feature was his sinking of a brilliant 20-foot putt. Williams and Hardie had to battle out 41 holes before victory went to Williams, the State amateur champion. The match was even throughout, neither ever being more than two up. Smith, who beat the 19-year-old Sydney player, Ferrier, is aged 23. Accurate putting gave him his win.
