CAPTURE AT NIGHT.

IN CANTERBURY TOWN. Per Press Association. . ASHBURTON, Nov. 12. The township of Lyndhurst, in tho Methven district, was the scene of an oxciting capture last night, when a young Christchurch man was found in the local store allegedly with a quantity of goods placed ready for removal. A resident of the district, Mr Errol Stewart, going to the store to post a letter, saw a man leaving the vicinity. After going two miles he decided to return, calling upon a neighbour, Mr T. Gray, who brought a gun; Mr Stewart’s sister accompanied the men. They drove up without a ( light, then the switch was turned on, illuminating the interior of the store,, and revealing a man inside. Miss Stewart pluckily volunteered to go two hundred yards to rouse the owner, Mr Polkingliorne, and his son, despite the fact that the night was pitch dark and it was not known if the intruder had accomplices. Meantime Messrs Knox and Cook joined the others.

Mr Polkingborne entered the store, but the maji made no resistance when he saw Mr Gray’s gun. He was subsequently arrested by the Methven constable.

Th® man, it is stated, had driven from Christchurch, in a car, having a bicycle to carry the goods from the store to the car. A delivery van had been stripped of goods, which were stacked in a dark corner.
