Ulm’s special certificate of airworthiness was obtained just before sailing for Canada. It was issued only for the Pacific flight. The total permissible weight is 9800 lbs, enabling the carriage of 580 gallons of fuel, with a range of about 3600 miles. The ’plane must not be flown with the maximum load unless the aerodrome and other conditions are favourable. Also, the speed must not exceed 140 miles an hour.
