NEW PICNIC GROUND.

TOTARA RESERVE IMPROVEMENT.

With the re-opening of an abandoned road through tlie Totara Reserve, the Poliangina County Council has made available to motorists a picnic ground of outstanding beauty. Tlie road is to be sign-posted. It joins the main road at the bottom of a hill at the northern end of tlie reserve. It is about a mile long and leads through some unusually fine native bush to a clearing in grass, several acres in extent. A feature of the bush along the roadside is that a large number of the trees, from 12 inches to over three feet through, are unusually 'tall and straight in the barrel. There lias been constructed a fireplace for the convenience of campers, while the river offers good sivimming facilities. In his report to the council, the engineer (Mr D. Watson) said the road was now in a reasonable state of repair for motor traffic. The report proceeded: “All the culverts have been attended to; some have been replaced with concrete pipes, while those not required were removed and filled in with metal. Water has been cut off, and the road, where it was very muddy, has been cleaned up. A fair amount of metal was carted and spread in the ruts. It is hoped to have further improvements carried out before the holidays. At present motorists, with reasonable care, can drive through very beautiful bush scenery to a good picnic ground on the riverbank.”
