MELBOURNE’S FETE.

PROGRAAIAIE ON SATURDAY

AIELBOURNE, Nov. 11. Saturday was the biggest day in the Centenary programme so far, and many important events took place simultaneously. The aerial pageant at Laverton attracted 100,000, who witnessed a thrillling display of aircraft'm peace and war, including the bombing of a- model ship erected in the aerodrome. The air race winners attended, and were presented with their prize cheques and trophies by the Duke of Gloucester. In conjunction with the pageant a giant barbecue held 27 bullocks which were roasted on open fires and distributed to visitors. At the showgrounds the naval, military and air forces gave a gymkhana, including spectacular displays in which cavalry, infantry, artillery, armoured cars and naval gunners participated The Duke had a busy day attending these gatherings and the Flemingtnn races. A dinner at the Town Hall by the Soldiers’ League was attended by more than 600 soldiers. The London crew won the race for the Victorian eights championship of two and a half miles on the Yarra on Saturday by eight lengths; the University and Alereantile crews filled the places. London led from start to finish. The visitors, however, are ineligible to hold the championship. Two games of polo were played on Saturday. South Australia B (handicap 9) beat New Zealand (handicap 7), 16—15. Grigg scored four goals, Hennessy two, and Gould two. Hall again replaced Johnston. Victoria A defeated South Australia A.

Speaking at the Empire Service League Conference on Saturday Mr Malcolm MacDonald (Under-Secretary for Dominion Affairs) said civilisation depended largely on the strength of the Empire which in turn depended on populating the Dominions. It would be a mistake, however, to resume migration until markets had been found for Dominion products; migrants then would not deprive Dominion people of jobs.
