SHORTAGE OF WATER
TERRACE END RESIDENTS
EFFECT OF HOSING,
Unable to secure a proper flow owing to the low pressure, residents q; Terrace End on the higher levels yesterday were compelled to carry water from downstairs to bathrooms upstairs. Tlie flow- on the lower levels in the same area was also- considerably restricted. There was just sufficient pressure available at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church to enable the water-driven organ to produce a soft, low tone. The poor volume of water also had its effect at St. Paul’s Methodist Church, Broadway, where the organist just managed to keep the instrument play-
ing. There is no doubt that the trouble experienced was due to the excessive use of hoses in gardens yesterday and all last night, following on the spell of warm weather during the past few days. This has meant that other householders in less favoured localities have been deprived of essential supplies. With the position so annoying on the higher levels, of Terrace End so early this year, it is not a very liappy augury- for the hot, dry months of midsummer. _ The city engineer (Mr J- K. Hughes) stated this morning that though the gravitation supply was being drawn off the small upper dam at firitca. there was an ample flow available from that source. The main reservoir, after having been empty during cleaning operations, was being filled yesterday. The artesian pump was working at full pressure last evening and the low pressure was due to the’-amount of hosing going on m gardens. _____
