CRICKET.

COLYTON AND FEILDING SUCCESSFUL.

The first games in the Feilding cricket competitions were concluded on Saturday afternoon with clear-cut wins for both Feilding and Colyton, who thus open the championship scoring with three points each. The weather was perfect for cricket, and the wickets in great order. The games were not without interest, Feilding fighting a first innings deficiency to win by three wickets while a stubborn second innings by Public Service averted an innings defeat, their opponents from Colyton being obliged to bat again to finally win by nine wickets. OLD BOYS v. FEILDING. Feilding resumed their first innings with nine wickets down for 117 runs the total being taken to 130, or 12 runs behind Old Boys before the fast wicket fell. Resuming again, Old Boys set out to lengthen their lead to the furthest possible degree, but matters did not go well against the good bowlof Sievers and H. Dewe. The first partnership was soon broken and hopes of seeing J. Dewe repeat last week’s performance of 90 were shattered when his younger brother Henry beat him all the way with his second ball. G. Connell made a good effort and Mitchell also hit out, but from thence the innings was colourless until Eade and Haywood kept together at the last wicket Eade scoring well while Haywood kept his wicket up. Biss, who had come on late and bowled exceedingly well to get four wickets for six runs, closed the innings by dismissing Haywood with the total at 102, leaving Feilding 115 to get to win. Opening shortly before 5 p.m. with Jeffs and Laing, Feilding soon showed they were out to force the issue. An attractive display of batting say 66 runs hoisted before the first pair were separated, Laing lifting a ball to square-leg, where Smith held it. Sievers and Fitzpatrick were sent back in quick sucession, Donaldson then joining Jeffs, who carried a bright effort to 40 before he was dismissed. With two more wickets falling quickly, matters looked rather uncertain for Feilding until Donaldson opened his shoulders and with Kennedy obtained the requisite runs.

Detailed scores are as follow: OLD BOYS. First Innings 142. Second Innings.

PUBLIC SERVICE v. COLYTON. Colyton also had their first strike to complete, and reached 180 before the last wicket fell. McLeod batted well for 27 and Howell contributed 12 but

the rest failed. Service were left with the substantial handicap of 121 when they entered upon their second innings, the odds disposing them to go out for a hit rather than any effort to pull the game out of the fire. Batting positions were drawn for and Hight and Whitehead opened. By one of the strange chances of cricket what had promised to be a more or less hit-and-run exhibition turned into a splendid game, the Servicemen knocking up 165 before they were dismissed. The chief display after Hight’s 25 was the ninth wicket stand between Hart and Wild, when just on 80 runs were added. Power, the Colyton skipper; used every wile to part the two, but they continued on to score merrily until Brown got a good ball past Wild when he was 42. The strike ended when the last man, McLeod, lifted Brown info the paddock to Howell, Hart being unbeaten with 41.

The unexpected effort left Colyton with 45 runs to get instead of the innings win that had been expected, these being obtained for the loss of one wicket. Scores are as follow;

B GRADE GAMES. Sandon batted first against Wesley on No. 3 wicket, but with the exception of Drew the run-getting innings of last week against High School was not repeated. Drew compiled a splendid 74 before he fell to Smith, the same bowler getting Sadler at 21, while Meads fell to Fisher at 20. The strike produced 153 runs, Fisher getting five wickets for 47 and Smith 5 for 56. Wesley replied with 84 (Fisher 34, Beazer 14, GarJick not out 10), Drew taking 5 for 24 and Sadler 2 for 6. Going in again, Wesley fared worse than in the first effort, the strike - producing 26 runs. Drew was again on the wickets with the ball, getting five victims clean bowled, while Meads bowled two, and two were run out. Sandon enjoyed a three-point win by an innings margin. On No. 4 wicket, the game between High School and Feilding showed clear batting superiority on the part of the school boys. Chiefly due to a great innings of 97 by White, School ran up 187 runs for the loss of five wickets, the innings then being declared closed. Feilding replied with 70 (Rowe 14, Kitchen 12, Reid 12), the bowling of White (6 for 27) and Mcliidoe (4 for 35) being more than the batsmen could handle. Going in again, Feilding could only gather 27 runs to their total, Crump on this occasion taking five wickets for eight runs and Mcliidoe four for 12. School easily obtained a threepoint win.
