MARTON, Nov. 8

The last competitions of the season were played on Tuesday by the members of the Marton Ladies’ Golf Club. In the morning a stroke competition for a trophy presented by Mrs Gower was won by Mrs Frank, 92 — 17—75. In the bronze division, Miss Openshaw’s trophy was -won by Miss Smith 95—19—76. In the afternoon Canadian foursomes were played for trophies presented by Misses Crooke. Miss J. Fullerton-Smith and Mrs Holdaway proved the winners, 59 —24 — 35. After afternoon tea Mrs Harris, the ladies’ captain, presented the trophies won throughout the season. There was a good attendance of bowlers on the Marton green yesterday afternoon, when a number of games were played. An interesting game was played between the teams selected to play for the Hurn Cup and Harford Tikis. The Hurn Cup team was represented by Porteous, J. Miles, Atkinson and Low, and the Tikis team by Barton, Thomson (substitute for J. Miles), Purnell and Gorrie. The scores were: Hurn team, 24; Tikis team, 14. , The tennis courts at Marton District High School were well attended yesterday afternoon for the official opening, which was favoured by delightful weather. A match was played, Old Pupils v. Present, the former winning by the narrow margin of 11 sets to 10. Afternoon tea was provided by present pupils, and during the interval Mr PI. L. Wilson, the headmaster, declared the courts opened for the season. Mr F. P. Gould, an ex-pupil, has donated two medals for competition. Mr M. C. Gould (Bulls) and Mr A. Way (Marton) have been spending a few days in Auckland, and returned home on Tuesday evening. Dr Thomas Oliver, the distinguished scientist and wool expert from Scotland, and Mrs Oliver were the guests of Mr and Mrs J. Stewart, Harris Street, Marton, last evening, then motoring on to Wanganui.
