THE CENTENARY CELEBRATIONS

MELBOURNE, Nov. 8. From the base of the tower of St. Paul’s Cathedral, 80 feet above the street, Archbishop Head blessed the city this morning. More than 300,000 people gathered in Swanston and Flinders Streets with bowed heads as the Archbishop’s voice rang clear from amplifiers above the roar of the t ra fft c He said: “For all God’s guidance, blessing and protection of our city and State in the first century of its history, we humbly thank Him and His holy name.” The ceremony preceded the opening of the Australian Anglican Congress, Archbishop Head descended and gave the inaugural address in the Cathedral. He said: “Our task is to see that a Christian Australia will serve God in the future century.” Addresses of goodwill were presented on the chancel steps by Rt. Rev. Campbell West-Watson, Bishop of Christchurch, and _ Rt. Rev. A. A. David, Bishop of Liverpool. Preparations have been made for the accommodation of 400,000 at the ceremony of dedication of the Shrine of Remembrance on Sunday.. It is expected that 25.000 ex-soldiers will march in procession. Thirty-two loudspeakers will be distributed among the crowd to ensure that all hear the proceedings.
