(From Our Own Correspondent.) UM.UTOI, Nov. 6. The annual Guy Fawkes celebration by the school children was held in Mr Hcmming’s paddock last Saturday evening. The rain which had been threatening during the day cleared off considerably towards night time, and despite one or two light showers tho evening proved a groat success. A huge pile of wood had been stacked by tbo children and was surmounted by a realistic eifigy of Guy Fawkes. There was a large attendance of children and parents, and tho lighting of the fire was tho commencement of a spectacular display of fireworks. When tho main dis play w'as over, supper was handed round by the ladies, and it was not until a late hour that tho fire had burned low and the company departed homewards. Messrs J. and B. McKegg have left the Umutoi district for Whangarei. A heavy frost was experienced hero this morning. UMUTOI, Nov. 7. Mrs A. Bell and her daughter Velma have returned after a visit to Palmerston North. Now that cropping is almost completed farmers are taking advantage of the line weather and are starting shearing. Tho young iambs are doing remarkably well, which gives promise of a largo number of fat lambs leaving tho district within a few months Some farmers have already sold their lambs at .forward delivery, the prices being 17s and upwards. At those prices good breeding owes should bo in strong demand. The county, lorry is at present rc-mctal-ling the road leading to the new mill site. Tho mill,is now being'shifted, and a delay of about . two months will elapse before cutting operations arc again in full swing.
